Think it'd be a sad state of affairs if it got to the point where SEO was dictating design; search engines don't create content or buy things, people do. Confusing search engine optimisation with designing the overall user experience is a mistake. Obviously there's aspects of SEO to be aware of when developing a website, but the race to the top of a search engine is all a bit pointless if you don't have a compelling design and/or content that meets users expectations.

This article is dead on. The only thing I might add is that SEO is becoming so important that it's finding it's way into design.
